How to detox the right way: The myvitamins guest blog

As we wave bye bye to the festive period and welcome January feeling bloated and run down (thanks to all those mince pies, pigs in blankets and mulled wine),  you’re probably looking for something to  make you feel a little healthier this New Year – right? Well, a little detox is the perfect way to kick start your January and help you feel back on track to feeling fitter, stronger and healthier. 


What actually is a detox?

Essentially, a detox is a way of flushing nasty toxins out of your body. The way in which the body does this is predominantly through the liver via the blood stream and there are many ways in which you can kick start this process. 


What are the benefits?

Having an annual detox helps to:

  • Boost the immune system
  • Aid weight loss
  • Improve the health of the skin
  • Clear the mind
  • Reduce inflammation

What should we be eating?


Get your greens (…and reds, blues, purples, yellows, oranges!)

Chow down on a wonderful variety of colourful fruits and vegetables, including broccoli, oranges, lemons, blueberries and spinach. These lovely foods are packed full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which help to protect the body against free radicals. Try stick to raw vegetables as much as you can as the cooking process can kill some of the nutrients.


Stay hydrated

Guzzle down on at least 3 litres of water a day – this will help flush toxins out of the body and purify the kidney and liver. 


Load up on super foods

Get your super food fix – spirulina and chlorella are superstars in our mind when it comes to detoxifying the body - this is due to their high levels of chlorophyll, which known to be powerhouses at purify the blood. The function behind these fantastic super foods is that they bind to toxins and unwanted metals within the body and help eliminate them through the blood stream. So try adding a tablespoon to your morning smoothie, or consume in a convenient tablet form for a super simple super food boost!
